Quality of Berber Moroccan rugs

One of the most asked questions of our customers is how to check a rug’s quality. It is not easy to make the decision to buy a rug or choose the right rug for your space.

The Berber carpet is responsible for completely changing the environment of our place. One Moroccan rug can make your place angelic and comfortable.

Until about the early 20th century Moroccan rugs were almost only known within the country itself; woven for personal use and with little or no outside influence.  Morocco’s many Berber and Arab tribes were deeply rooted in their own distinct culture and traditions and their rugs strongly reflected those ancestral influences. These can differ widely from tribe and region with each family, tribe, and group of tribes having  their own dyes, weaves, loops, knots, and patterns

Therefor we’ve listed a few aspects to pay attention to:

Choose hand-knotted

There is a difference in quality when it comes to hand-knotted and machine tufted rugs. For machine tufted rugs the wool is tufted through a latex base. This base will possibly start to crack after a year or so, resulting in lots of shedding (losing wool). Therefor, always check the back of a rug to see the material used for the base. When it comes to Moroccan Berber rugs cotton is often used, wool is more rare. Another trick to check this, is to have a look at the fringes. These are made from the open ends of the loom . the base of the rug. Both wool and cotton are durable, although wool is more sustainable and better looking.

Source of the wool

The wool used in the production of this Beni Ourain rug is 100% original, which makes it one of the most rugs Distinction and market demand.

A bit more difficult to discover, but probably the most important when it comes to Moroccan rugs: the geographic location where the wool is sourced. Wool from sheep hold in lower altitudes areas (around the bigger cities) have a short fibre length. This wool breaks easily and will shed a lot. This wool is used most frequently for Berber rugs sold in the big cities, cause it’s the cheapest option. On the other hand, wool from sheep that are held in higher altitude areas like Morocco’s High Atlas has a longer fibre length. This drastically increases the quality of a Berber rug.

Dye the wool

To make this rug more attractive, wool was dyed to make the finished product look better after something. For dyeing, the best dyes are used to ensure that this rug will not lose its color even after being used several times Years with rough use.

Knot density or carpet weight

Check the density of the knots. One way to do this is to count the wrapping lines that are used between 2 rows of knots. For example: we use two lines maximum, but 5 or more lines are often seen. Another good indicator is the weight of a Berber carpet. One of our medium sized rugs contains an average of 12 kilograms of wool.

Ancient weaving techniques

The particularity of this Berber rugs is that it is woven with ancient weaving techniques by Berber women who come directly from the interior of Morocco in these regions which are still rich in its traditions and cultures.

These special techniques are the source of the high quality of this woolen rug.The longevity of this carpet.

The technologies used in the fabric also have special significance in the production of this rug. All of these things make for a quality rug.

The high quality of this mat comes in a sense when it is confirmed that this mat can last for many years of continuous use. These factors also make this rug very reliable as you can clean it as often as you like and you won’t worry about its quality deteriorating.
